Occupying too much space in the middle of the frenzied airport, I stood awkward for a moment wishing I could play my vocal cords as a violin to help communicate my repressed thoughts; I could never properly explain myself. I navigated the conflux of human bodies traipsing frantically through the suitcased crowd as the rainy afternoon flight from Albion, Nebraska disembarked in West Dover, Vermont. Isabelle departed our house as the leaves turned gold to care for her mother; cancer dwelled in her lungs and Death conducted her soul to the heavens from a shallow grave. Nervous thoughts invaded my mind as I anxiously counted the number of passeng
sunrise how you always sunsetembraced by the summer air
we captured star trails and
traced the milky way five times
as your fingers quietly removed
the insides of my vulnerabilities and
burrowed them beneath the ocean
excited waves peel them away like the
pebbled-skin of a sunburst tangerine
dancing in the reflection of the moonlight
I confess to you that you are as lovely
as you are empathetic and that
I am as stable as a horizontal
sun dial tethered by silver lace
and moth powder
tomorrow morning flickers in and
we watch the coastline explode into view
like sticky dandelion snow twirling through
intoxicated by the lilac afterglow

we fall asleep beneath the tamarind tree
and melt away into the summer air
